Workshop 3: Advanced research grant writing for Science and Engineering (EN2WESE)

Description: Aimed at academics who have already had success in gaining standard grant funding and who are looking to optimise their chances of winning larger, collaborative (and often multi-disciplinary) grants offered by funders such as Research Councils, EU and Charities. The workshop will cover what funders look for in a good programme grant, what some of the challenges are and at ways to overcome these.
This workshop is open to the Faculties of Science and Engineering only and is aimed at those with experience of writing successful project grant applications.
The trainer, Dr Pamela Johnstone, was originally a researcher herself before managing multi-million research portfolios for large research funders.

Pre-requisites: This workshop is open to those in the Faculties of Science and Engineering only and is aimed at those who have experience in grant writing. There will be a small group session and participants will be asked in advance if they would be willing to share a previous unsuccessful large bid together with referees? comments. There is no obligation on any individual applicant to do this, but for the session to run at least one such example is essential.

Workshop 2: How to prepare a good research bid for Medical Faculties (EN2WMF)

Description: What makes a good research bid? In addition to the perspective of the academic, participants will be invited to consider this through that of the funder and peer reviewer. Important elements of bid preparation and most common reasons for failure will be explored with advice and tips being provided throughout the day on best practice. The workshop will be interactive in nature and participants will be encouraged to share experiences and partake in group exercises.
This workshop is aimed at those who already have some experience of applying for or have been involved in an application for funding.
The trainer, Dr Pamela Johnstone, was originally a researcher herself before managing multi-million research portfolios for large research funders.

Pre-requisites: This workshop is open to those in the Faculties of Medicine only and is aimed at those new to or requiring refresher training on the application process.
